First: the concept of embedded vs. non-embedded deductibles applies to family health plans only: not individual insurance policies. With an embedded deductible, each family member has their own individual deductible that’s “embedded” within the greater family deductible, so once any one person meets their individual deductible, insurance starts covering their expenses, even if the overall family deductible isn’t met. With a non-embedded deductible, the full family deductible can be met by one or many family members before insurance covers anyone’s expenses. Embedded plans limit individual risk, while non-embedded plans may be beneficial for families with high healthcare usage, as the full deductible is met more quickly.
