A qualifying life event (QLE) is a major life change that allows you to start, stop, or adjust your employer-sponsored insurance coverage outside of the open enrollment period. Examples include marriage, divorce, having a baby, job loss, turning 26 or 65, and more. For instance, if you were to get married outside of your company’s open enrollment period, you and your spouse could both make changes to your insurance plans at that time. However, any changes must typically be made within 30 to 60 days of the event, so it’s important not to miss that window.
